What is Muharram to You?

A name, A message, A Belief and or A Behavior.

Muharram is commemorated by Shi’a Muslims as a month of mourning for the martyrdoms of Imam Hussain and his companions and family members, at the Battle of Karbala on Muharram in the year 61 AH (680 CE).

 Although battle of Karbala lasted from morning till noon, Shia Muslims have ever remembered it with sorrow and passion till now with their unique mourning rituals.

In the ninth of Muharram Shia Muslims take out an Al’am procession on day of Tasua as a symbol of Hazrat Abbas ibn Ali (A), Imam Hussain’s loyal and beloved brother and mourners go door to door for elegy and requiem recitation for Hazrat Abbas (A) and others who were killed in Karbala.

In tenth of Muharram people go to central cemetery of the city as mourning procession and groups and or they gather in mosques to revive the behavior of Ashura by helding eulogy recitations and breast beating ceremonies on the great affliction of Imam Hussein (A.S.).

After glorious holding of Ashura noon congregational prayer it is customary for mosques and some people to provide and donate free meals (NAZRI) as lunch to all people.

Ta’ziya  is also an Inseparable part of Muharram. People perform kind of Tragic and Condolence Theater inspired by historical and religious events, which shows what happened in the day of Ashura and Tasua.

The commemoration of Ashura and Tasua, every year serves to remind us the sacrifices of the family of the Prophet (S)
